Queen Mary of Denmark’s most fabulous fashion moments

The Danish Royal couple hosted a dinner for the UNI Chief Executives Board at Kronborg Castle on May 7, arriving by water on the Royal Ship Dannebrog.

For the event, the Queen wore the ‘Narella’ hogarth print pleated chiffon dress from Erdem (a favourite in her wardrobe), which she paired with her Lady Dior Clutch in blue, Gianvito 105 powder blue suede pumps and aquamarine and diamond earrings from Bruun Rasmussen.

As she attended a concert at the Royal Danish Academy of Music on May 6th, 2025, the royal wore a matching set from Max Mara in white, with jewellery from Dulong Fine Jewellery and shoes from Gianvito Rossi to accessorise.

Donned in a navy blue dress from Copenhagen fashion house, Soeren Le Schmidt, the Queen attended a church service in Copenhagen that was held in connection with the 80th anniversary of Denmark’s liberation.

Notably, the brand also designed the dress Queen Mary wore to her husband, King Frederik’s ascension to the throne ceremony in early 2024.

At the end of April, Queen Mary went to the opening of the Danner af Danmark exhibition at  Frederiksborg Castle, which is also known as Denmark’s National Museum.

She wore a purple-indigo blouse with puffy sleeves, with a black skirt that finished before her ankles. She finished her look with a purple clutch and sling-back heels. 

The exhibition pays tribute to Countess Danner, who married King Frederick VII of Denmark and was a former ballet dancer and commoner. The Tasmanian-born royal is taking part in a documentary about the countess.

Queen Mary wore a blazer and skirt from the sustainable brand Andiata in Vatican City for Pope Francis’s funeral.

She also wore Gianvito Rossi heels and carried a Mulberry bag.

The Danish monarch wore a classic Andiata suit to the 20th anniversary of Research Døgn, which translates to research day, at the Nørrebro Theatre.

During the science festival, there were more than 700 lectures across Denmark, where universities, cultural, public and private institutions came together.

During the event, scientists discussed how artificial intelligence, climate change, and human conditions can shape our society and our planet in the future.

She also paired the suit with Gianvito Rossi heels.

Mary spoke at the Mary Foundation Conference in Copenhagen on April 24th, 2025.

Her foundation combats social isolation, encourages community inclusion, and addresses bullying and wellbeing, domestic violence and loneliness.

The Danish royal family got dressed up for a performance at the Royal Theatre’s Old Stage in Copenhagen in the lead-up to Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday.

Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday celebrations began with an event at Aarhus City Hall.

On the final day of her state visit to France, Queen Mary stepped out in an outfit that paid homage to her French hosts with a purse from Chanel and a turquoise brooch from Christian Dior.

On the evening of her second day in Paris, Queen Mary of Denmark hosted a dinner to thank her and King Frederik’s French hosts at Le Grand Hotel with the theme ‘Denmark – France: Partnering for a Resilient Europe for the Future’ in four areas: renewable energy, healthcare, defence and culture.

On day two of her state visit to France, the Danish royal couple joined the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron in a visit to both a kindergarten school and an artist workshop in Paris.

Her Majesty wore a smart business suit from Australian brand Scanlan Theodore, which she also donned on her day of official appearances in Sydney on April 29, 2023.

Mary looked beautiful as always in a sophisticated semi-sheer high-necked blouse that she paired with a spring-themed A-line silk floral skirt as she attended a gala in the Élysée Palace on day one of her state visit to France.

Her outfit was further accessorised with a pearl-adorned clutch bag and gold and topaz earrings from Danish brand  Ole Lynggaard that retail for almost $25,000 AUD.

Notably, while wearing a tiara is customary for most gala dinners, the Danish Queen opted not to wear one on this occasion, presumably because France removed the strict white-tie and tiara dress code required for state banquets in the early 2000s.

The Danish royal couple were all smiles as they arrived at the Élysée presidential palace in Paris on the first day of their state visit to France.

Queen Mary wore a matching single-breasted jacket and skirt from Christian Dior, with a matching black leather handbag, headband, and monochrome heels.

The pale pink long-sleeved sequin “Georgia” gown from Jenny Packham was worn by the British royal in 2023 at a state banquet held to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan to Princess Rajwa and then again that same year for a Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.

The Daish royal stunned in a beautiful black pantsuit at the 20-Year Celebration of the Crown Prince Couple Awards.

Notably, she re-wore her favoured pearl drop earrings from her wedding day as well as a 200-year-old royal heirloom around her wrist. Comprised of 213 pearls surrounding a portrait of Princess Augusta of Bavaria, the bracelet has been worn by the nation’s queens at state events for over a century.

During a state visit to Berlin, Germany, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassies in the country, the Queen attended an engagement at Schloss Bellevue palace.

For the occasion, she opted to wear a blue flared sleeve coat that colour coordinated with her blouse and headband, while her nude pumps matched the patterning on her midi skirt.

Despite some wet and windy weather, the King and Queen were in good spirits as they met with members of the public during a visit to Holstebro to celebrate 750 years since the town was founded.

To fight against the autumnal chill, Her Majesty wore a longline wool burnt orange coat, with a hardly-seen burgundy patterned dress, which matched perfectly with her berry-toned kitten heels and headband.

Queen Mary arrived at Copenhagen City Hall on October 10, where she unveiled the new Christmas Stamp – the first of her and King Frederik’s reign.

All proceeds from the stamps go to a charity that provides homes for at-risk youth.

The Australian-born royal was dripping in sophistication as she attended a special evening at a Copenhagen Art Centre hosted by the President of Iceland to say thank you for hosting her, as is tradition for state tours.

The King and Queen of Denmark held a state banquet at Christiansborg Palace to formally welcome Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir and her husband, Björn Skúlason, in early autumn 2024.

Notably, the Icelandic state visit is the first inbound state visit for the Royal Couple and the first outbound state visit for the newly elected president of Iceland.

In May 2024, Queen Mary became the new patron of Denmark’s Frie Forskiningsfond, also known as the Independent Research Fund.

Each year, the organisation awards 400 grants to research projects in a combined amount of over 1 billion Danish Kroner.

At the annual research conference held in Copenhagen, the royal presented the award for ‘Original Idea of the Year,’ also mingling with other award recipients.

For the day, she wore a stylish grey Max Mara jumpsuit.

In late September, Queen Mary helped to open an exhibition in the House of Industry, which according to the royal family, “provides an interactive look into how Mary Elizabeths Hospital is going new ways to make room for the lives and needs of patients and families, even though they are sick and hospitalised.”

At a prestigious awards dinner held in Copenhagen, the royal was a vision in blue in the figure-flattering ‘Elodie‘ lace dress from Australian label MOSS & SPY.

During a summer tour to Vejle in southern Denmark, Queen Mary channelled her inner Audrey Hepburn in an expertly tailored a-line style 1950s-esque skirt with a tapered waistline from Baum und Pferdgarten.

 Proving she is the sophisticated style queen once more, the mother-of-four married together the neutral tones of a Ralph Lauren blazer and a bright linen midi dress by Zimmerman as she greeted onlookers at Assens harbour in western Denmark on August 21.

In a rare fashion choice away from her standard style, Queen Mary wore a surprisingly monochrome outfit as she visited the harbour of Roenne for a royal tour of the Bornholm Regional Municipality with her husband.

For the occasion, she wore a white business shirt with puffed sleeves, a nautical-themed calf-length tweed cardigan from Weill Paris, and smart black slacks.

Alongside a delegation of several other European royals, Queen Mary and her husband, King Frederik, were invited to the Elysee Dinner, hosted by the International Olympic Committee at the Louvre to celebrate the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Held two nights before the opening ceremony, the event truly was a dazzling display of fashion, food, and intra-country connections.

The Danes turned out in droves to welcome King Frederik and Queen Mary to the town of Graasten, who arrived on July 9th, 2024, to commence their summer residence at Grasten Castle.

This year is the first that the King and Queen have hosted at the royal residence, having previously spent their summers at Fredensborg Palace.

At the end of June, Queen Mary joined her husband, King Frederik, and her children, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, to visit Qeqertarsuaq island in Greenland. As the country’s largest island, Qeqertarsuaq is home to the Arctic research station. For the occasion, Mary donned a navy blue coat and red beanie, accessorised with a tan crossbody bag.

Queen Mary swapped her usually high-brow fashion for a more relaxed summer look for the high school graduation of her son, Crown Prince Christian.

Her delightful print midi-skirt paired perfectly with her gorgeous white blouse and a pair of simple tan heels.

Stepping out for an appearance at the annual Maratonsang event (commemorating the longest day of the year) at Vartov College in Denmark, the Queen wore this gorgeous ankle-length orange dress from the brand with a white print of lilies.

Queen Mary was joined by her husband, King Frederik, mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, and aunt-in-law Princess Benedikte at a special ceremony held to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Constitution of Denmark at Holmen’s Church and Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

Given that she is known for her sustainable fashion sense and frequently re-wears outfits, it came as no surprise that the Queen was invited to give the opening address at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen on May 22nd.

No matter the colour, the mother-of-four never ceases to dazzle when donning a gown.

During a state visit to Norway, the royal was invited alongside her husband, King Frederik of Denmark, to a State Banquet hosted by King Harald V of Norway at The Royal Palace in Oslo.

For the occasion, she opted to wear a gorgeous lilac Birgit Hallstein Couture gown – a dress she first wore in 2015 to the wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden.

With the warmer months fast approaching, Mary opted to wear this spring-style outfit during her official state visit to Norway, a far cry from the long skirts and coats she had been wearing since becoming Queen.

 The royal was a vision in red as she waved to crowds while boarding the royal yacht Dannebrog to return home to Denmark after her two-day state visit to Sweden.

While her high-neck, block-coloured, midi-length dress is an outfit we have come to associate with Mary, the pairing of it with a camel shawl was an exciting addition.

 In celebration of Queen Mary of Denmark and King Frederik IV of Denmark embarking on their first state visit since becoming crowned, Queen Silvia of Sweden and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden held a state banquet in their honour at Stockholm Palace.

Given the significance of the occasion, the Australian-born royal wore the Danish Parure tiara set alongside the prestigious Star of the Order of the Elephant, the Sash and Star of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim, and the traditional portrait of the reigning monarch.

On April 7th, the Australian-born royal inaugurated the incorporation of the southern part of Jægersborg Hegn as an untouched forest for deer at Naerum Port in Copenhagen.

For the occasion, Mary well and truly embodied country elegance, pairing a turtleneck grey patterned jumper with a black Seeland Cottage Quilt Lady Waistcoat, a grey suede floppy hat, a practical green vest, and hand warmers.

Five days earlier in Copenhagen, Queen Mary attended a special military event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Guard at The Freedom Museum. 

Rugged up against the cool weather, the royal wore her shoulder-length brunette locks out with a warm fedora-style hat fit snugly over her ears to compliment a stunning regal navy blue coat, navy leather gloves, and brown-heeled boots.

Queen Mary certainly was dressed for the occasion as she welcomed members of the Government and the Secretary of the State Council to the first State Council Dinner in Frederick VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg since the coronation.

The 52-year-old wore a flowing maxi sequin skirt that brushed the floor from By Malene Birger – a skirt she first wore back in 2007 – and paired it with a gorgeous black satin off-the-shoulder top. 

Bringing the look together were earrings, a brooch, and a bracelet from the Danish Ruby Parure.

On February 29, the Queen paired this purple business blouse with a high-waist grey woollen skirt as she attended a Rare Disease Day event in Copenhagen.

The simple, yet perfectly styled look was completed by diamond earrings from Sophie Bille Brahe, and custom rings and bracelets from Dulong Fine Jewellery. 

She last wore the light grey suede boots from Gianvito Rossi in 2021 when she attended an event for the International Day of the Girl Child.

The mother of four paired this double-breasted outfit and matching trousers from British brand The Fold with pale pink, snakeskin pumps and a gorgeous calfskin leather clutch by Danish brand Quidam Bags to the Elite Research Awards held in Copenhagen on February 26th. 

On January 28, 2024, Queen Mary went outside of Denmark for the first time since King Frederik’s accession. She attended the Men’s EHF Euro 2024 final at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, in a beautiful burgundy Alexander McQueen suit. 

This outing also marks Queen Mary’s first solo engagement since her husband’s reign began.

Queen Mary looked stunning in a long-sleeved purple dress and matching hat as she participated in a celebratory church service at Aarhus Cathedral.

She matched with her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, who also wore a purple dress.

Notably, Queen Mary wore the same outfit to the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla on May 6, 2023.

In her first public appearance since ascending to the throne of Denmark, Queen Mary was joined by her husband and eldest son for a meeting at the Folketing (Danish Parliament). 

The 52-year-old wore a striking coordinating blue ensemble with a peplum-style jacket that was accessorised with a large, wide-brim hat, heels, and gloves that all matched.

On January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark stepped down as Queen of Denmark, abdicating her throne in favour of her eldest son and heir apparent, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and his wife, Princess Mary. 

Looking every inch a royal in a regal white outfit that was handcrafted by Sooeren Le Schmidt and Birgit Hallstein, the full-length gown featured a sweeping neckline fabric that was expertly draped around her neck and over her shoulder, bearing a striking similarity to her Uffe Frank wedding gown, which Hallstein also designed. 

Her outfit was completed with Mary’s glittering Danish Duby Parure Earrings and their matching brooch, ring, and hair clips.
