JK Rowling’s amazing fantasy world of Harry Potter has had a huge impact on the modern literary landscape.
It’s the best-selling book series in history and spawned the third-highest-grossing cinematic franchise of all time. It also has a website, Pottermore, followed by millions of fans. Even one’s choice of House, be it Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin, has been co-opted by some as a personality test of sorts.
The series grew popular for how it promoted very clear positive values in its readers and managed to carry on its popularity even as its original audience grew up over the course of a decade. Both young and older readers appreciated what Harry Potter stood for.

No, the single most iconic image in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series is the titular character’s glasses and scar, an image that’s been front and centre on every cover since The Philosopher’s Stone.
The scar is something of its own cultural icon now, with some people regularly sporting a temporary tattoo or even a permanent lightning bolt tattoo on their forehead.

Origins
For Harry Potter, the lightning bolt scar on his forehead is the only mark left on his body after the Dark Lord Voldemort attempted to use the Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra, on him.
His mother Lily had previously shielded him from Voldemort’s spell, sacrificing her life to protect him and in the process providing him with a powerful magical barrier counter-charm. As Voldemort cast the Killing Curse on Harry Potter, Avada Kedavra reflected back to its caster and destroyed Voldemort’s body, shattering his soul into fragments, one of which made its way to Harry himself.
Meaning
From an allegorical perspective, the scar is chock full of meaning, pointing to the various struggles in Harry’s life.
For one, it points to the suffering he experienced due to the loss of his entire family—an indelible mark that serves as a permanent reminder of the weight he carries.
In addition, it’s also his mark of association with the moniker, “The Boy Who Lived.” Throughout the early books, many people would see the scar on his face and call him by that name. Ultimately it would circle back to his “curse” as the one who would eventually destroy Lord Voldemort. We learn a lot about the scar in Goblet of Fire and how it connects to Voldemort.
Lightning Bolt Shape
According to Pottermore, the wand motions of the Killing Curse are in the shape of a very familiar lightning bolt. This is compelling evidence that suggests the wand motion is responsible for the very unique shape of the scar.
Of course, that’s the in-universe reason. In a 2007 live chat interview about Deathly Hallows, Rowling said, “To be honest, because it’s a cool shape. I couldn’t have my hero sport a doughnut-shaped scar.”
The Connection
Because a fragment of Voldemort’s soul was left in Harry, he effectively became one of the Dark Lord’s Horcruxes.
This intimate connection is responsible for Harry’s numerous migraines and burning scar sensations, especially in Prisoner of Azkaban and Chamber of Secrets. This resembles the behaviour of the Dark Mark that’s branded onto every Death Eater, which also burns in relation to Voldemort’s presence.
The connection was weaponised by Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix, when he sent a false vision of Sirius Black to Harry through the scar to lure him in.
Longevity
Most scars fade with time, and even the word “permanent” isn’t completely accurate when describing them.
But Harry Potter’s scar has never faded with time. Over a decade and a half later, well into his teens, the scar remained as clear as the day he got it. That’s because the scar is a magic remnant of Voldemort’s attack, carrying a piece of the Dark Lord with him.
