Pippa Middleton’s fiancé James Matthews is no stranger to tragedy as it emerged his younger brother died while climbing Mount Everest.
Michael Matthews, then 22, is believed to have died in the ‘death zone’ region of the mountain in 1999, The Mirror reports. His body was never found.
In his 2014 autobiography Confessions of a Chelsea Boy, youngest brother Spencer Matthews wrote about the family’s struggle after Michael’s death.
‘His loss was devastating for the family and over time this became worse because the circumstances surrounding Michael’s death have never been fully explained,’ Spencer wrote.
In 2006, James’ dad David took legal action against the company Michael paid to organise the expedition, claiming his death was caused by negligence.
Spencer added in his book that James was heartbroken after the loss of his brother.
‘James took the news badly,’ Spencer wrote. ‘With just a year and a half between them, he and Mike were the closest of friends. The loss was heartbreaking for James.’
