NAIDOC Week is about to kick off and there are plenty of ways to get involved to honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As well as attending NAIDOC events, there are many ways to celebrate your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, including by consuming content that explores the culture, history and stories of Australia’s First People.
According to the official NAIDOC website, NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The purpose of the week is to herald the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC week kicks off on July 7 and ends on July 14, though it’s important that the discussions and cultural celebrations do not end there.
This year’s theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’.
The official NAIDOC website reads: “The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
