Should Andrew and Fergie be allowed to remarry?

If you didn’t know who they were and spotted them at the races or a movie, you’d think Sarah Ferguson and her former husband, Prince Andrew, were a couple of mid-life online daters.

There’s a sparkle in both their eyes, an affection that suggests intimacy and, as a friend who recently met with both of them tells me, they get on like a house on fire.

So would the royal family’s most consciously uncoupled pair remarry?

It’s a question that’s gained momentum as the Duke of York and his erstwhile wife not only spend more time together, but are increasingly open about their enduring companionship and sense of family.

Sarah, who has previously pointed out that they’re the “happiest unmarried couple in the world”, regularly posts pictures of her husband both with and without their daughters. On his recent birthday she shared a relaxed picture of him, and when he prepared for this year’s Trooping the Colour she proudly posted images of him in uniform. Crucially, at their daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding last year, the pair worked seamlessly together to ensure a smooth and joyful day.

It’s a far cry from 27 years ago when Fergie not only deeply embarrassed herself but also the royal family. She had been separated from Prince Andrew for less than six months and was staying with her daughters at Balmoral when the front pages of the newspapers splashed compromising photographs of her having her toes sucked by her ‘financial adviser’ John Bryan. As Princess Diana messaged royal reporter Richard Kay: “The redhead’s in trouble.”

With the newspapers languishing on the breakfast room sideboard at Balmoral, Prince Philip reportedly flew into a rage at his daughter-in-law’s shameful antics and she duly fled the Scottish estate with her children and nanny. She and Prince Andrew officially divorced four years later.

In the years since, neither has had a lasting relationship and while Fergie would continue to make mistakes – most notably in offering access to her former husband in return for cash – Andrew continues to treat her with fondness.

Some believe that after the death of Prince Philip, her greatest detractor, who is now 98, the pair will be free to remarry, but those close to her say the non-couple are happy with their unconventional relationship.

As Sarah has said: “We’re a family unit and we lead by example.

“We support each emotionally and we support each other, healthwise.”
